Despite Saturday's bone-chilling,
wind-driven rains, 25 stalwart souls reported to the starting line of the 10th
Ocean View St. Patrick's Day Boys & Girls Club 5K road race.
The winning runner, from East
Falmouth, was 22-year-old Nick Scalfone who splashed around the East Chop course
in the excellent time of 17:42 more than a minute better than Carlos Borges of
Tyngsboro, winner of the 2006 race, the last time the St. Pat's was run. Nick
was Saturday's youngest competitor.
Finishing second, as he did two
years ago, was Garry Metters, 42, of Tisbury, in 20:00, 26 seconds behind his
'06 time.
The first female finisher was
Erica Lasek-Nesselquist of Woods Hole. Her time was 21:01, 1:42 faster than
Katherine Shanor, 40, of Oak Bluffs, who was best in '06.
